The Great Gull
"The Great Gull" by Howard Nemerov
This poem is a very visual description of a seagull that comes from the sea and sits on the speaker’s lawn. The speaker feels inspire by the majesty of this bird, who looks like a noble or a high priest dressed in a grey cloak. The speaker is so taken with the beauty of the bird that he feels he should be reverential towards it. Finally, the bird leaves and the speaker feels like the bird simply didn’t find his laws interesting enough to stay a while.
